New Media Marketing Explained. Article 1 Basics

I own a marketing company and my biggest challenge is that many of my potential new clients do not understand how marketing and in particular new media marketing works.  My experience has been that most of the objections to marketing come from a lack of understanding rather than business experience.

Many of you as business professionals, entrepreneurs, and small business owners may want or need a simple guide to contemporary marketing and that is the purpose of this article.  What is new media and why is that different than social media?

If you are asking yourself questions like "How can I as a small business owner take advantage of the new marketing environment to increase sales?", and / or "How much does new media marketing cost?" then this article was written for you.

The New Media Era (NME) began around 2008 marked by the Obama Campaign which created a historical milestone by using new media so effectively.  On election eve Barack Obama had 2.3 million friends on Facebook.  Think how much business you would have if you had 2.3  million fans of your business.

This new method of reaching out to people using the Internet is called new media marketing.  As opposed to old media marketing or traditional marketing like newspapers, radio, and television.

There are a variety of online tools that can be used by marketers and advertisers including social media.  For instance, Facebook and MySpace, blogging, business networking sites like LinkedIn and geosocial sites.  Who hasn't heard of Twitter?

Of course, a key component of online (new media) marketing are websites.  When discussing the use of websites for marketing and sales you also have to include search engines and search engine optimization (SEO) in the conversation.

New media marketing has a lot of advantages over previous forms of marketing.  You can reach literally millions of people instantly but more importantly you can also easily target market segments by city area, zip code, by sex, and even on a more granular level.  For instance, you can now pay for advertising that is only seen by American University students.

New media marketing is also mobile and viral.  Video is a great tool for modern marketing.  One promotional video can be used on your website, in your email, posted to social networking sites like YouTube and used in active marketing campaigns as well.

Watch a sample promotional video:  http://www.augurps.com/.  Note:  If you do not immediately see the video refresh the browser and the video should appear near the bottom of the visible screen.

The best reason to use new media for marketing is that it is a lot less expensive than other forms of marketing like television and print media.

  1. I’ve also learnt how to devise marketing plans which are very important as we need research and statistic to back our proposals to solicit buy-in from our clients. Hence, taking up the Conducting Market Research module was very useful. My research skills were enhanced and I was able to pitch my projects to my clients more successfully.
